Mucho Mojo by Joe R. Lansdale
The second Hap & Leonard novel has much more of a racial feel than the first: Leonard inherits a house in a black neighborhood from his uncle, and decides to refurbish it. Hap is called in to help. In the process of making over the house, they discover a sordid mystery and enlist the help of a couple of local cops to solve it. This second novel solidifies the relationship between Hap & Leonard and sets the dark humorous tone of the series in a more convincing way than the first did. I was laughing out loud at some of the dialogue. It also introduces some very convincing supporting roles. At times I was reminded of the Easy Rawlins novels by Walter Mosley, but much, much more cynical. Very good stuff.
