Brown Sabbath vol. II by Brownout

Brown Sabbath vol. II by Brownout

The very concept of Brown Sabbath should eliminate it outright: injecting latino rhythms and horns into the Black Sabbath catalog, isn't that a little like Kenny G. does John Coltrane ? Actually, it isn't. Brownout walks a fine line with this concept (it's the second album of Black Sabbath covers) but succeed at remaining very faithful to the originals while truly spicing them differently. The melodies and harmonies (if such a word applies to Black Sabbath) are mostly intact, the groove is usually very slightly altered to give it a latin tilt, but it's not blatant. Most importantly, the heavy is still there in full force, with just a touch a sweetener from the horn section (usually call and response or slight harmony alterations / enrichments). And it works, it really does. In fact this second album is even better than the first to these ears: I guess Brownout has had a couple of years of touring to hone their approach. I find the arrangements tighter and the music generally more satisfying, even though the covers are lesser known Osbourne era Black Sabbath. Highly recommended.
