Noble House by James Clavell
I'd thoroughly enjoyed Tai-Pan when I read it a couple of years ago, so I decided moving to HK was a perfect time to delve into the mammoth follow-up Noble House, set 150 years later. Clavell is a great storyteller and creates wonderful characters, but here he clearly got lost in too many side plots that don't really contribute much to the story. As a result the novel is longwinded and meandering, and while still a pleasant read, not one I'd recommend unless you're really keen. There's a TV series adaptation with Pierce Brosnan, I might give that a look just for kicks.
