Stone & Sky by Ben Aaronovitch

Stone & Sky by Ben Aaronovitch

Every time I dig back into a Rivers of London book, it's with a mix of anticipation and fear of disappointment. Truth be told, few novels in the main series have truly disappointed, and even the shorter novellas with Abigail are really good. It's the rest (the German and American stuff, the comics, etc.) that I never managed to connect with. I was a bit more apprehensive because Stone & Sky is not set in London but in Aberdeen, and while Foxglove Summer (also not in London) is one of my favourite novels in the series, London is a big part of the appeal. Turns out I needn't have worried too much, because what really works in this series is how much you love the characters. There's a pretty high degree of silly in the whole thing, if you take a step back and look around, but the characters sell it. Here Peter Grant, while on a family vacation, is roped into a murder investigation that looks right up his unusual alley. In parallel, Abigail and Nightingale get involved in an unusual animal hunt. Of course, both threads end-up merging, and there's a slightly suspension of disbelief stretching on an oil rig. But hey, I read the Rivers of London for fun and inspiration, and Stone & Sky delivers both in spades.
