The Musical Mojo of Dr. John

The Musical Mojo of Dr. John

A tribute concert to Dr. John while he's still with us (and in fact, with a number of the artists presented here on stage). These star-studded affairs are always a little tricky although it's quite evident here that all the big names truly love Dr. John and his music. It's a good start, but probably not enough to truly satisfy me. The production is too sleek, it lacks the underlying grit that pervades most of Mac's early music (his most recent stuff - Locked Down excepted - has too much of that swanky veneer for my taste). All in all a pleasant listen with a few shining moments (George Porter's and Zigaboo Modeliste's Junko Partner, John Boutté's Let's Make a Better World...) but not a landmark live recording.
