Empire of Imagination by Michael Witwer
My recent renewed interest in old school roleplaying led me to purchase this biography of Gary Gygax. It's easy to read, but that's about it's only redeeming quality. The author decided to romanticize the story, complete with invented dialog and cinematic scenes, and it's terrible. Furthermore, the focus is firmly on Gygax' frankly pedestrian youth and not on what could have been at the heart an interesting story, with the Arneson tussle, the creative control of TSR and Gygax' life swirling down the drain. These things just zip past after looooong chapters on Gygax being spooked by ghosts as a kid. Long story short: don't bother.
