Metallica (Asia World Expo HK)

Metallica (Asia World Expo HK)

I'm in two minds about this concert. On the one hand, arena means shitty sound, loud louts galore and standing 200m from the stage. Not my favourite conditions to enjoy music. Also, inevitably totally scripted show, not a shred of spontaneity. But, sharing this experience with my son was quite something (he was in it to the hilt.) I'm increasingly convinced that these massive concerts are more of a mass religious experience than a musical event. It's about yelling the lyrics at the top of your lungs with 15000 people around you doing the same. And once you get into the swing of things, it's actually quite an experience. It took me a while, and the sound really was muddy. Makes appreciating the guitar harmonies that make Metallica to me a little tough. But when the classics started rolling in, Master of Puppets, Unforgiven, Seek & Destroy and especially Fade to Black (probably my favourite Metallica song) they slowly won me over. Not my most memorable concert by a long stretch, but it was a fun moment and I don't regret doing it. Bonus: my son's smile afterwards.
