Live from the Fox by the Tedeschi Trucks Band
Ever since their first album release (and despite loving Derek Trucks' solo work and liking Susan Tedeschi's) I've struggled with the TTB's music. Live at the Fox has finally allowed me to nail why that was the case. The musicians are not at fault, and neither are the compositions. It's the arrangements I have problems with. I guess it's inevitable that an 11 piece band would impose some rigidity on its members, but what I loved about Derek's playing in particular was the freedom of ideas he poured into it. Sadly the TTBs arrangements have bottled that, even live. Don't get me wrong, this isn't bad music, it's quite listenable. It's just too stiff to let the members truly shine.
