La Lampe d'Eugénie by Sacha Derien
(Disclaimer, the author is a friend.)
La Lampe d'Eugénie (Eugénie's Lamp) is not an easy book to peg as it straddles several genres but really sticks to none. It's part thriller, part spy novel, part 'fictional story of my life'. The elevator pitch is that Sacha discovers an old message in Russian jammed in a lamp inherited from his wife's aunt. Trying to understand the coded message inside, he's dragged into a whirlwind of intrigue that's way over his head. The book is a very pleasant read, feels a bit like a Malaussène with a little less pathos and a lot more (deliberately lousy) puns. It's a great summer read if, like me, you enjoy entertaining novels that won't hurt your head too much on the beach.
