With You in Mind by Stanton Moore
I am in two minds about Stanton Moore's lastest trio record. On the one hand, it is absolutely not what I expected, and very far from his previous, Conversations. On the other hand, it's good music, just totally not what I was after. Conversations was an honest to god jazz trio album, just infused with Stanton's polyrhythms and a true New Orleans DNA. As such it was pretty unique and a marvelous success. With You in Mind still has a trio foundation, but the repertoire is much closer to what you might expect in a Galactic album, and the many guests (on virtually every tune except the title track) breaks down the trio format entirely. As I said, this is good music, just not what I expected and (I suppose) what I wanted from Stanton's stellar trio. I understand that plans were changed when Allen Toussaint died and this became a tribute album. I'll be listening to it, it's good stuff, but I'll be eagerly waiting for a proper follow up to Conversations.
