Dune Messiah by Frank Herbert
I remember being puzzled and disappointed at this book when I first read it as a teenager. Dune, for all its philosophical considerations, was action packed and all about the main character taking his destiny in hand. Dune Messiah, in stark contrast is all about philosophical considerations with the same main character in doubt throughout the book. Rereading it with adult eyes and experiences, this is a much deeper book about a man trapped by the destiny he chose himself. And the worse thing is he knew at the time that it would entrap him and yet never saw a way out. For all its bleak outlook, Dune Messiah ends up on an optimistic note of sorts: children!
