This western novel came highly recommended, but I didn't expect the mammoth of a book that showed up in my mailbox. The beginning is slow going although the characters are very well fleshed out and endearing, but it's really when things get going with the cattle drive that the novel becomes gripping and unputdownable. At the heart this is a story about two old cowboys who head out for one last massive and insane cattle drive from Texas to a newly pacified Montana. It is a quintessential old west story and frankly required reading if you have any affinity at all for the genre (or even if you don't).
