John Medeski's Mad Skillet
This album by John Medeski's new project Mad Skillet is a bridge between New York City (John Medeski on keys and Will Bernard on guitar on the one hand, Terrence Higgins on drums and Kirk Joseph on sousaphone on the other). Very groovy, this instrumental album definitely has strong NOLA roots - unsurprising with two Dirty Dozen Brass Band alumni on board - but there's a rough New York edge as well. The tracks are well balanced and though Medeski doesn't play and compose as "out" as he does with Martin and Wood sometimes, it's not straightforward "in" either. There's lots of space for all four musicians to shine. A great record.
