Au Temps de Botchan vol 1 by Jiro Taniguchi

Taniguchi's art is so lovely that any story he's involved in draws me in. I struggled with Au Temps de Botchan (The Times of Botchan in English) though. It focuses on an author and his clique in early 20th century Japan, but the main character is not very likeable, and the mix of first and third person narration disturbed me a bit. Ultimately, I feel like you can't really enjoy what it is about if you don't already know about the period, something which presumably Japanese readers will be familiar with, but I wasn't. I have vol 2 lying on a shelf, so I'll read it, but so far I'm not hooked.
