The Golem and the Djinni by Helene Wecker
I think it was Aaron who recommended this novel to me (but I could be wrong). I enjoyed it in the end, but found it a bit long-winded for what it was. You think at first that this story of a Golem and a Djinni who end up (separately) in 1890s New York is going to be a metaphor for immigration, but it's not, really. It's a fantasy romp first and foremost, and while it's got big sentiment and all, it lacks the depth it would have needed to justify the 600 or so pages. So as I said, I enjoyed it, but it didn't grab me, and I'm not sure I can recommend it unless the pitch really appeals.
