The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Sonny Liew

The Art of Charlie Chan Hock Chye by Sonny Liew

This graphic novel, a biography / art book of the fictitious Singapore comic book artist Charlie Chan Hock Chye received many awards, and it is quite obvious why: it's a mindblowing and groundbreaking account of the hidden and not so glorious history of Singapore as well as a wonderful declaration of love to comics as a medium. It is layered on multiple levels, stories within stories but also the exploration of various genres (both in terms of content and graphical approach). It's heavily referential, and I most likely missed many of these references which didn't hurt one bit for when it comes to just getting engrossed in the narrative. This is the best graphic novel I've read this year by a long mile. Highly recommended.
