22 Fort Street by Lise Guillon

22 Fort Street by Lise Guillon

Lise Guillon is a French photographer I met in Hong Kong, and 22 Fort Street is a collection of Hong Kong photos she took in her late teens while living there from 2017 to 2021. I had seen one of her images at an exhibition there, and found it quite striking. When I heard she had a zine out, I ordered it. 22 Fort Street is a straight collection of black and white film images, no text or context. But to me, it's a stroll back through the Hong Kong I knew and loved. Many of these places I also photographed (or tried to) and I can safely say that despite her young age, Lise had (and presumably still has) quite an eye. The photographs on display focus primarily on people, and there are quite a few portraits I find very striking, of street sellers or small trades. They all feature the sharp contrast that the bright Hong-Kong light will enhance, and I love that book for that also. It's about the atmosphere, not so much about the detail. Really great zine.
