Sengo vol 1 by Yamada Sansuke

My son got me the first two volumes of this manga for my birthday, and I must confess that it took a while for me to get into Sengo. The story is set in the late 40s when two Japanese soldiers, an officer and a private come back to a devastated Japan, facing a life of scrambling for food and alcoholism. At first, I couldn't see where the story was going, but gradually the characters, particularly the gruff but naive Kadomatsu, grew on me. It's a story of survival, of self-respect after defeat, and a side of post-war Japan we in the west are rarely aware of. This first volume deals with Kadomatsu and Kawashima's attempts at surviving in the ruins of Tokyo, in usually less than savoury ways.
