It's been close to three years since Galactic's last, short and sweet EP Tchompitoulas. Needless to say I was very excited at the prospect of a new album by Galactic. Also, Heart of Steel with Irma Thomas on 2009's Ya-Ka-May is a favorite of mine, so nothing could go wrong here. And nothing does, although I find myself slightly frustrated nonetheless. Galactic put their music in the service of Irma Thomas' soul queen credentials, and as a result, this feels less like a Galactic album than I hoped. I suppose Irma Thomas fans might feel similar in the opposite direction, but while I find this to be a great modern soul album, I was hoping for more of a Galactic edge in the sound. Still, I can feel that it's slowly growing on me, so my views might have changed by the time I've listened to it a few more times...
