L'Ode au Chou Sauté by Inoue Areno

L'Ode au Chou Sauté by Inoue Areno

I found this short Japanese novel in a flea market, and because it focuses on food and I'm a huge midnight diner fan, I decided to pick it up. It's a very pleasant and touching read, if a little naive. The story is centred on three 60 year old ladies who run a take-away restaurant of home made food together. One is a widow, another is divorced but still in love with her ex- and the last never lived with a man but has been in love with one forever. Through a year of seasonal menus and food choices, as well as an odd relationship with their cute, young rice delivery guy, the three learn to know each other better and come to grips with their respective conundrums. Very cute and delightful read.
