Le gentil orc sauvage by Theo Grosjean
My daughter bought this in a flea market and the fantasy reference in the title led me to read it. I see that the young author is better known for his more realistic or social comedy stuff, but this is an early book. It's part of a trend of sorts where fantasy is used not to tell an adventure story as much as it is used to tell a human story. While it's nowhere near as trash or provocative, it reminded me a little of Joe Daly's Dungeon Quest (which I should reread to see if this hunch is justified or not). Anyway, our lead character Oscar is a civilised orc who discovers that the savage orcs are back on the war path. Before he can warn anyone, orc civilisation is nearly wiped out, but he manages to escape with the civlised orc princess towards the goblin lands. There he will discover that civlised may be a very relative world, but also that there's a bit of savagery in every orc... I really enjoyed it, and would recommend it as a different kind of fantasy read.
