Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo
Believe it or not, I had never read Akira start to finish. Plunging back into the series, I had clear memories of the first volume, but the rest was all fresh and new, and so different from the movie that it was a genuine discovery. While it's a bit long, likely a result of the idiosyncrasies of manga series in Japan, it holds its own and develops its post-post-apocalyptic narrative in a really convincing way. I don't see much point in telling you what it is, and I suspect more readers of this blog have read it than not, but if not, go read it, it's a monument of graphic novel art.
