Dr Werthless by Schechter and Powell

Dr Werthless by Schechter and Powell

Dr. Fredric Wertham is an infamous and reviled figure in comic book circles. He is the psychologist who, under the pretext of protecting children from nefarious influences, got US comics to self-censor from the 50s until the 80s. It may sound ironic that a graphic novel explores the man's life and legacy, but I actually think it's a very fitting medium especially considering that - without absolving Wertham of his single-minded crusade against comics - the book largely rehabilitates many other parts of his life and achievements, especially when it comes to desegregation. A really interesting slice of US cultural history, well worth a read.
