Prime Minister
One of the most fascinating documentaries I've seen in a while. When Jacinda Ardern became Prime Minister of New Zealand kind of by accident, her documentary maker of a companion started filming. Prime Minister is a movie put together from these rushes, official footage and various interview bits done during and after the matter. From the surprise election, the early push for progressive policies, the Christchurch massacre to the COVID crisis and her resignation, you follow the journey not only of the challenges faced but of how the system and the electorate can grind down even the most dedicated. This movie helped me put my finger of something I've known for a long time (I guess) which is that our political systems can only really accommodate sociopaths, which for the most part are not the leaders we need. I would consider this mandatory viewing for anyone who is looking for a sliver of democratic hope, but will point out that the takeaway is ambivalent making me both more hopeful AND more cynical...
