La Véritable Histoire du Soldat Inconnu by Tardi
I bought this because of a current interest in the figure and mythology around the Unknown Soldier, an anonymous WW1 casualty buried under the Arc de Triomphe. I was not expecting a hugely historical graphic novel by Tardi, and was therefore not surprised at the surrealist-around-the-edges daydream of a graphic novel this is. It's Tardi's second published work, and while his graphic style is well established already, this rambling nightmare of memories of an author-become-soldier that is soon to die is not narratively striking. Interestingly though, many of the components of said nightmare later end-up in his Adèle Blanc-Sec series, the first episode of which was published a year later. For completists only.
