Les Evaporées by Elodie Poirier
I've know Élodie's work for a few years now and while I admire the formal research and aesthetics of what she creates, I am sometimes taken aback at the depth — and what I perceive to be personal pain — that feeds into the work. Not that that's not legitimate, quite the contrary, just that my own (comparatively) sheltered life makes it hard for me to project into such troubled paths. Les Evaporées though, while very deep, feels to me like a powerful story reinforced by the corpus of work shown here, and perhaps has a bit more distance which makes it all the more effective. The images are hand-doctored polaroid lifts on textiles which gives them both texture and structure. Élodie explores images of the women in her family, documenting and rebelling against the paths of submission they experienced. The images are interspersed with biographical notes and poems. A very powerful piece of work altogether.
