Nestor Burma contre CQFD by Leo Malet
There had to be one and, as I make my way through all the Burma novels, there will likely be more, but Nestor Burma contre CQFD absolutely does not work as a crime novel. Coincidence has always been a tool in the arsenal of the detective, it's a staple of the genre, but it's one that needs to be used cautiously, and in this early Nestor Burma novel, it is not. As a consequence, Nestor Burma contre CQFD fails on many levels, and the attempt at an emotional ending, while a new addition to the canon at this stage in Burma's career cannot save a plot that doesn't stand on its own.
