Nestor Burma et le monstre by Léo Malet
While this is chronologically not the first Nestor Burma story, it's actually a rewritten version of a fake American noir novel Malet wrote and published in 1942. It centers on a teenage kid who dies of arsenic poisoning, expands to a mafia style crime gang and finally focuses on the reveal of who the poisoner is. It's quite cliché, as noir goes, but nicely convoluted as well, and a very cool read. Covet, Faroux and Hélène are already in the picture, and there's even a nice little rivalry with a young journalist who wants to solve all the crimes, damaging Burma's private detective reputation on the way. Nifty.
