Northlanders by Brian Wood

Northlanders by Brian Wood

I recently decided to give the complete Northlanders a re-read, and I have to say it's still one of the best comics I've ever read. Wood explores the Viking motif in all its many acceptions, from the classic raiding and pillaging in the North Sea which we all know and love to the siege of Paris, the struggling merchant communities on the Volga river and the Icelandic colons. While there is no overarching story here, each book being (more or less) its own arc, the whole is nonetheless coherent and high quality throughout. The only slightly less interesting (because of a somewhat overpredictable story arc) series is the one that was later redubbed the Icelandic Saga, but even that is good, just not as good. Superb reading, can only recommend.
