The Passing by Jason Roberge
I heard about this album on Alias' blog and it intrigued me enough that I decided to give it a listen. One track in particular hooked me early on, ie. Empty Traces pt1. It's got sophisticated harmony, really interesting parts and dynamics, going from quasi pop to quasi metal. The fact that Roberge plays every instrument except the drums is an added source of amazement. That said, I'm still a little ambiguous about the album as a whole. Not that I don't enjoy listening to it, but at times, the pop takes over in my perception and I just disconnect. I have a similar relationship to Steven Wilson's prog albums, and I guess it's not a bad thing to be compared to. The final eponymous 30+ minute track though is pure prog epic, with movements, discursion and recalls with truly dramatic moments. So I guess all in all I do like it a lot.
