The Poison Machine by Robert J Lloyd
I actually read this just after Christmas 25 but forgot to review it. It's a thriller set in 17th century England and France, part of a series of three novels (so far) which I didn't know and probably didn't help with immersion. My wife got it for me because the French version is entitled L'Ombre de Paris (the Shadow of Paris) which she thought would feed my current obsession with Paris history. And truth be told, the depiction of 17th century Paris is probably the best thing about this novel, since the plot is really weak. But even that doesn't really mean it's worth a read. I'd give it a miss.
