Le Petit Monde de Don Camillo by Giovannino Guareschi
Don Camillo is known to everyone in France my generation through a series of black and white movies with comic actor Fernandel that used to be on heavy rotation on TV when we were young. I vaguely knew these were adapted from a book (a series of books, it turns out) and I stumbled upon this old edition of the first collection of short stories in a flea market (The Little World of Don Camillo in English). I enjoyed the short stories a lot more than I thought I would. There's a hint of social realism, a lot of gentle criticism of ideological thinking and a lot of wit. It's very humane in its depiction of post-war rural Italy and it's obvious the love that Guareschi has for the kind of people he depicts. Delightful.
