Pink Floyd at Pompeii
A 1972 theatrical release, Live at Pompeii is about as weird as you can imagine a concert movie being. Filmed and recorded (for the most part) in a deserted ancient Roman amphitheater in Pompeii, it explores some of the most spacey and proggy material from the post-Barrett Pink Floyd catalog. I'd seen the movie several times online and on DVD, but I had missed a release of the music as standalone. Unsurprisingly, it does really sound like a live recording, due to the absence of an audience. That said, there's a space in the audio that makes it quite distinct from studio recordings. It could be argued that this is Pink Floyd at it's peak, when it was a collective. After Dark Side of the Moon, tensions in the band steered it in different directions. The masterpiece here is the two part Echoes, which clocks at around 25mn altogether. The rest is mostly excellent though, and works even without (or maybe better without- the dated visuals.
