The Summit of the Gods
This is an improbable French adaptation of Jiro Taniguchi's epic 6 volume manga saga The Summit of the Gods, centered on alpinists and what drives them, but (in typical Taniguchi fashion) actually addressing broader questions about we humans and what drives us forward. My memories of reading the manga was that I loved it, it was engrossing and beautiful, but it was so meandering that by the end I'd kind of missed the forest for trees and didn't quite grasp what it was about. Condensed in 90mn of gorgeous animation, the point comes out loud and clear. This is a masterful adaptation, and highly recommended whether you have enjoyed the original mange or whether you won't bother reading it.
