The Bloody Chamber by Angela Carter
I can't remember if I first heard about The Bloody Chamber from Neil Gaiman or from Philip Pullmann. Either way, I was looking forward to these modern retellings of classic folk tales with the erotic and/or horror undertones brought to the forefront. After all, I love folk tales, what could go wrong? I guess what did go wrong is that I just found the whole thing uninspired, and the writing excessively florid. Not much to add, really...
