Beyond the Wall and other adventures

Beyond the Wall and other adventures

Beyond the Wall and other adventures is a classic roleplaying game with an unusual gaming proposition. At core, it's a D&D clone of the OSR (Old System Revival) variety, but the design choice is to make it playable with no GM preparation whatsoever. The characters are designed in session with a walkthrough "character pack" that helps determine characteristics and other stats at the same time it creates a character background. Characters are young adventurous villagers who go on their first adventure. The adventure itself is similarly designed in situ through a "scenario pack" and lots of rolls. Having read and tested (once) the game, I can attest that it works quite nicely provided the GM is ready to improvise and be flexible. Where it kind of breaks down is that the scenario packs really assume the characters are fresh from the village, which makes their repetition awkward. This is addressed in the supplement Further Afield which I have read but need to read again.
