This is the second TV series by that name that I saw... but it has very little if anything to do with the original BBC's Dirk Gently. This is set in Seattle and while Dirk's character is British, and at the core the series is about the interconnectedness of all things, that's really where any similarities with the other series or the original novel stop. I was all geared to hate it for that very reason and... I loved it. It's wacky, very off-kilter both in theme and production, and it's absolutely full to the brim with awesome characters. Dirk is annoying (but he's meant to be) and his sidekick is whiny (but he's meant to be too), and all the others, good guys, bad guys or in between are awesome. You start understanding nothing and you end understanding something, which is better than nothing. Wholeheartedly recommended, especially if you're into the Chuck Palanhiuk / Tim Powers kind of cosmic fiction.
