Arab Jazz by Karim Mismé
I can't remember what made me pick up this crime novel. It was a long time ago and it stayed unread on my shelf for since. The housemove made it refurface and I gave it a try. It's a surprising and unusual crime story, but with a lot to go for it, not least of which some very compelling characters. A woman is murdered and her neighbour downstairs, a depressive unemployed immigrant youth is clearly being framed for it which forces him out of his stupor. He and an atypical duo of cops then unravel a broad story of trafficing and religious nuttery. There are some slightly unbelievable turns to the story, but it's a good read. Worth checking out.
