Hidden Figures
This movie based on real events tells the story of three black women who were instrumental in pushing the NASA space program forward in the early 60s at a time when segregation was still going strong. It's a powerful movie, although it feels a little edited for public consumption. As with all movies about segregation you haven't been subject to yourself, you never know if things have been toned down. I suspect in this case they have, and while I enjoyed the movie, I don't know that I can recommend it as reflecting segregation accurately. There were certainly moments where my viewer's indignation flared, but that doesn't mean it wasn't worse than what was depicted. A special mention to Taraji P. Henson whose acting in this is stunning. I recommend the movie, but will probably read the book to get a sense of how much (if any) it was smoothed.
