1970 by Avishai Cohen

1970 by Avishai Cohen

I have shied away from a few of Cohen's last releases, either the duo album or the string quartet one really didn't appeal to me (to be clear, I didn't listen to them, so I could be wrong). What attracted me to 1970 was the line-up which included two of the members of the Aurora quintet. I guess I was expecting something in the same vein. 1970 could not be further away, and I'm not sure it works with me. I should have paid attention to the title: this is essentially a hommage to the sound textures of the 70s, with a subdued soul-funk feel. Nothing wrong with that in principal, but I don't feel Avishai Cohen's writing works in this musical context. It's decent stuff, but veers to close to pop with not much spicing it up.
