From a Whisper to a Scream by Allen Toussaint

I'm waking late to the Allen Toussaint party. I only purchased one of his albums while he was still among us, and it was an instrumental (interesting, but the song format is really where he shines, I think). Since then, I keep noticing that songs I like by a slew of different artists are all Toussaint originals. This compilation of his early work illustrates both his writing talent and (perhaps) why he was covered so much. There's something low key about his delivery that I find endearing but is probably not his biggest selling point. Good stuff.
