Jihad by Igor Baranko
A graphic novel set in a future Russia was enough to spike my interest. Many things intermingle in this complicated story: dictatorship in Russia (this was written in 2004, and is fairly prescient in some ways), buddhism and religion in general, the symbolic nature of some early aspects of the Soviet Revolution, etc. There are several key characters all converging to a final (and literal) showdown. There's a fair degree of mysticism in the way the story unfolds, something which clearly reminded me of some of Moebius and/or Jodorowsky's work. In fact there is something of Moebius in the art, and definitely something of Jodorowsky in the scenario. Considering this was published by Humanoids, not all that surprising. Anyway, not a masterpiece (in my opinion) but a very interesting and refreshing book.
