S'enfuir by Guy Delisle
S'enfuir by Guy Delisle (Hostage in English) is the real life story of a French hostage in Tchetchnya in the late 90s. I suppose story is the wrong word, because nothing much happens as such. This is a man's incarceration, his thoughts, hopes and despairs during a long four months of sequestration. It's very much about the little things that allow you to keep going. Delisle's pacing is masterful here in that he manages to keep you engaged despite the slow trickle of nothing much happening. You're not bored reading it, but you get a sense of the slowness of it all. Superb.
