Maigret Season 1
I must admit I was a little skeptical about this, in part because I have never seen Rowan Atkinson in a dramatic role, in part because I'm French. But the brits are good at historical reenactment, and Maigret is a visual treat. The Paris of the 50s is faithfully recreated, and feels real despite everyone speaking English, no mean feat. This is classic crime stuff, as my son reflected, with little or none of the post-modern grit that we see in so many shows today, and as a consequence it's refreshing. I thoroughly enjoyed these two episodes, despite an initial frustration that Maigret himself was too subdued. I guess that was Atkinson trying not to overdo it. He gets more convincing in the second episode though, and I look forward to watching the other two that have just been released.
