The Fifth Season by NK Jemisin
Aurélien recommended this to me as being really good fantasy and he was right. In terms of themes, world building and construction, The Fifth Season is a cut above the rest. It's ironic that I started and finished reading this book in New Zealand considering how everything in The Fifth Season revolves around earthquakes and tectonic shifts. Hard to describe the novel without spoiling anything, but let's just say that it centers on orogenes, people who can, if trained properly, control tectonic shifts. As the world stumbles towards apocalypse, we follow the path of one particular orogene who discovers that there is much more to it than she ever thought. Truly engrossing, highly recommended.
