Bought this on a whim because there were posters for Darren Watson's tour in Wellington and because I hadn't heard any Kiwi blues so far. This is so much more than a novelty though. Modern blues is so focused on instrumental prowess that lyrics are often nondescript, if not downright lame. Watson sings a blues that is full of meaning, bringing it back to the music of the downtrodden. The opener, Hallelujah (Rich Man's War) is a marvel, both lyrically and musically, a gospel tinged blues that cuts right to the meaning of war in our capitalist society. National Guy, Pilgrim and Too Many Millionaires are also lyrical gems. Watson's picking is superb, and the sound is rich but sparse, reminding me a little of Muddy Water's Folk Singer. My only tiny gripe would be that while Watson absolutely swings, the rest of the band (bass and harmonica) are a bit stiff in comparison. Still, Too Many Millionaires is a blues album that stands out in many ways, and I heartily recommend it. It can be purchased online here. I hope I get to catch one of Darren's shows in Wellington when I go back there for work.
