We Get Requests by Oscar Peterson Trio

We Get Requests by Oscar Peterson Trio

My friend Olivier listed this album as one of his favourite, and I realised I had been unconsciously avoiding it over the years. I guess I like Oscar the most when he's writing. Hymn to Freedom, Nigerian Marketplace, the Bach Suite... So I guess the perspective of an album's worth of covers didn't appeal so much. As often with these things, I was wrong. Peterson's take on this classics is unusual, and inimitable. There's a delicate touch that pervades every track here, but is particularly striking in Quiet Nights, Have you met Miss Jones and the Girl from Ipanema. The latter's been done to death and yet the trio manages to make it sound fresh. Great record.
