Cory Seznec Live at New Morning

Cory Seznec Live at New Morning

Two bands I love playing the same night in the same place in one of the three days when I'm in Paris felt like a miracle. A hostage situation in the street of the New Morning on the day of the gig felt like a reversal of that miracle. For Cory and his band, it must have been an emotional roller coaster not knowing if the gig was maintained, if people would show up... They had to shorten and reshuffle their setlist due to the delays in the start of the gig. Then the pickup of Cory's main guitar died on him as he took the stage. All of this probably diluted the energy that these guys have and demonstrated towards the end of their set.

The music is magnificent, a real blend of influences, from Louisiana to Africa. No juxtaposition there, a true melting pot. Cory's compositions, playing and singing are great, but the band is fantastic as well. Renaud Ollivier is one of the best drummers/percussionists out there when it comes to laying a polyrhythmic groove, and the warm tones of Thomas Garoche's double bass complement these grooves to build a lush foundation to Cory's compositions. Daniel Mizrahi and David Chalumeau both contribute incisive counterpoints to the groove, respectively on guitar and harmonica, and Cory lays his own acoustic workings and vocals on top. A fantastic band with a truly original voice, I hope to see them again in more relaxed circumstances.
