Hazmat Modine is a live powerhouse, led by energetic bandleader Wade Shuman. After 14 hours of overnight bus from East Germany and a half day cloistered inside the club due to a hostage situation in the same street, they took the stage and set fire to it in one fell swoop. I'm not always convinced by their records, but live it's always a treat. The band is constantly in flux, with few musicians still present that were in the band last time I saw it (Pam on Trumpet, Joe on Sousaphone and Steve on Saxes), but the new blood brings in a different energy. Charlie Burnham (electric violin) blew my mind in particular, with these insane rhythmic patterns he laid on the violin. Reut Regev was also a highlight for me with her powerful trombone sound and her wild improvisations. All in all a great evening of music. See them live if you can.
