A Woman's Soul by Rory Block
Rory Block became famous covering the Robert Johnson songbook. Her latest album is a Bessie Smith tribute, so less of a solo guitar repertoire to begin with, and that's a good thing. The songs are, as a consequence, much more rewritten and (I feel) more personal. That being said, Rory's voice and approach works much better on the raunchy gutbucket stuff than it does on the sweeter tunes. I suppose that's down to her voice and the way she sings. Still, a good collection of songs here, and the light backing (occasional bass and percussions) works well too. A good (if not stellar) record.
